If you went partying all night just to wake up feeling like the weight of your head has doubled? Or your entire body feels like a foreign thing implanted on you? Then you are definitely experiencing a hang over. Other signs include severe and continuous headaches, aching liver, taste of stale vomit in the mouth, sweating and tremors. Hangover is an agonizing  experience that leaves one swearing never to drink again, although as soon as the experience is over, they still go back to drinking.

There are some beliefs as to the causes of hangovers, one of them reasons that an assortment of poisons enter the body when there is high intake of alcohol, this especially so with the cheap wines and beers not made in the highest standards. Another cause is the free radicals that build up in the body when the liver breaks down ethanol.

The remedies are:

Rest

Sleep as much as you can as this helps the body to regain its strength. The brain is also in a better position to gain composure. Its best not to go out for work or school as it’s likely to make the situation worse. in such an instance, call the office and report your absenteeism than showing up looking like you just came out of a fight.

Drink a lot of fluids

Nothing knocks a hangover better than a good diet. Many people tend to overlook this and avoid food fearing that they will vomit out. Water is the best substance to take when nursing a hangover as it works to help the body rehydrate to replace the body fluids lost. Fresh fruit juice is also a perfect remedy to replenish the body. Similarly one should totally avoid caffeine or any product that has caffeine in it. This is because caffeine tends to dehydrate a person more and may be fatal if taken in large quantities. However, a weak cup of coffee may help to make the person more alert. Similarly, one can take sports drink to instantly boost the energy levels in the body.

Eat well

Vitamin C contains nutrients that enable the body to recover quickly and regain its strength. One should therefore take foods rich in Vitamin C such as green vegetables, fresh fruits and fish. Eat foods rich in minerals such as pickles or pickle juice. A hot bowl of chicken soup works perfectly well.

Shower

When taking the shower, switch between cold and hot water so as to regulate the body temperatures as well as keeping the body more alert.

Exercise

Physical exercises make the body more firm and more energetic to cope with the effects of hangovers. However, make sure that your body is stable enough to withstand exercises such as swimming or cycling.

Painkillers

Medications such as aspirin help to alleviate the headaches.

However there are some traditional hang over remedies which are also is said to work perfectively well. These include:

Eggs

Traditionally, it was believed that eggs such as omelettes, Prairie Oysters and the English fried egg could completely cure a hang over. There are others who believed that a raw egg taken in the morning would reduce the impact of the hang over. But the main reason why use of eggs as a remedy has gained popularity is due to the fact that eggs do contain cysteine which is a chemical that helps to eradicate the free radicals.

Pinching your hand

The nerve joint between the forefinger and the thumb on the left hand, is believed to be an acupressure point that can release tension between the head and the neck. Thus a hard pinch that is done at an interval of every 5 minutes can help to relieve the tension and thus reduce the intensity of the headache.

Salt solution

According to a research conducted on small mammals whose digestive system was poisoned, when they took isotonic solutions, their bodies recovered faster than when they were given pure water. It is therefore advisable to ad a few spoons of salt into the plain water to fasten the recovery process.

Take more alcohol

As absurd as it may sound, it was believed that a lot of alcohol taken in the morning would make the person cure nasty hangovers better. This is how it works; the liver attacks poisons in a given  order starting with ethanol, and once is broken down, it starts on methanol which then releases formic acid into the body system and thus the bad feeling when in a state of a hangover. But if the liver is hit with another dose of ethanol, it stops working on methanol back to the newly introduced ethanol. However, this is not a permanent remedy as it works until the ethanol is fully broken down then the person goes back to the hangover state.
